- Buy the Pattern: Fennel Fanny Pack
Hey there! Hope your excited about this pattern. Fanny packs have come back around and at first I was very against it. I didn’t even like them the first go around. I remember my mom had purchased me a pink and grey fanny pack for a trip and I wore it like a shoulder bag because the idea of wearing it around my hips and being the cliché tourist made me cringe. Now they’re back and have been popping up all over my feed…yuck! Then I came across the Fennel Fanny Pack by Sarah Kirsten.
The way she designed the fanny pack was so modern. Clean lines, sleek and boxy…it is just so different. Not to mention the classic fanny pack has that odd curved opening and if you are lucky a smaller pocket in the front. This design guaranteed two pockets and I loved the idea of being able to keep my stuff separated.
Despite the fact I had saved this pattern in the hype of the fanny pack return, I hadn’t actually gotten around to making one. The only reason I ended up actually purchasing the pattern, was when a friend reached out to get matching fanny packs for her and her daughter for their upcoming Disney World trip. Their bags came out so cute!!!

She had picked this adorable Minnie cheetah print and I could not get over how good they looked. The only thing that was a real challenge in the pattern, was having to use bias tape to finish off the raw edges. All of the bags I have personally made until this point didn’t require bias tape. The only experiense with bias tape I’d had was used finishing off a quilt. This fanny pack was so small in comparison to a quilt and the fact it was a dimension shape wasn’t helping. Not to mention I was now fighting multiple layers, a zipper and all the webbing for the belt. It took several attempts to get it right, but eventually I got the hang of it. Below is a picture to show off the inside.

Now I had made these back in July of 2021 and it wasn’t until this weekend that I had the urge to make another. The first issue…and sometimes my least favorite, was determining what fabrics I was going to use. I have been collecting a large amount of cotton fabrics over the last year or two to use for my Etsy shop and I wasn’t sure I wanted to use any of them for this project. Eventually, I remembered the small stash of fabrics I purchased for personal use.
My favorite prints right now are from a Michael Miller collection. The collection is called When Stars Align and it is so my vibe! The print I chose is the Voices From Beyond Black. You can’t go wrong with black, white and gold!

The fanny pack ended up being smaller than I remember but I love it all the same. The pattern is fairly basic and aside from the bias tape finishing, I believe most beginners would be able to confidently work this pattern. I love how helpful the instructions and graphic sketches were. The pattern is also really reasonably priced. I definitely suggest giving it a try.
If you end up testing out this pattern, be sure to share a picture! I’d love to see this awesome pattern in other prints.
