The Story:

When I first started my shop wristlets were something I made a lot. It’s an easy scrap pattern and was a fun accessory to go with my bags and wallets. Over time I’ve improved the pattern to evolve with my collections and can now share 3 different ways to make them, so let’s get to it!

In the below instructions, first is pattern A, then B and finally C. Scroll to the pattern you are looking for to begin your project…or make all three. Be sure to tag me @shychameleoncrafts in your completed projects!

Preparation:

Pattern A-

Step 1 – First gather your materials and hardware. Note that the above fabric has already been ironed.

Step 2 – Place the right side of the fabric facing down. Then fold the long edges inward towards the middle and iron. The goal is to create crisp folded edges and reduce the width from 2″ to 1″.

Step 3 – Place your fabric, right side up, on top of the 1″ twill tape. Sew 1/8″ along the edges to secure. You’ve created your strap.

Step 4 – Now it is time to attach the strap to the key fob. The key fob comes with prongs that pierce the fabric and keep them secure. It is important you pierce all layers. Start with one side of the strap, the twill tape should be facing up. You want the prongs to be through the fabric like above.

Step 5 – Fold the other end of the strap towards the key fob. The fabric should now be facing up. Pierce through those layers as well. Before moving on, I like to use a pair of pliers to fold the prongs down securing the strap in place.

Step 6 – Now you can either use key fob pliers or normal plier to bend the fobs into place securing the strap. Key fob pliers are better to use for this because they are wider and are covered in rubber so they do not scratch the fob, but you can accomplish this step without them.

I’ve made a variety of these wristlets over the years, each with their own personality. Be sure to play with different hardware colors and twill tape to make yours unique! Hope you love your new wristlet!

Pattern B-

Step 1 – First gather your materials and hardware. Note that the above fabric has already been ironed. and prepped for the next step.

Step 2 – You’ll want to fold the fabric in half long ways and iron. Then fold the outer edges inward toward the new center fold and iron. On one side of the center fold, iron the interfacing in place leaving equal space on the sides.

Step 3 – With the edges folded in and the center folded, you now have a strap that should be 1″ wide.

Step 4 – Pull the strap through the key ring.

Step 5 – Unfold the strap and bring the two ends together. Clip in place and sew the ends together with 3/8″ seam allowance.

Step 6 – Lay edges of the new seam open and begin folding the strap edges back in.

Step 7 – Once folded back up, your wristlet should start taking shape.

Step 8 – Sew 1/8″ along both edges of the strap. Then move the key ring to the seam that joined both ends of the fabric. This will be the base of our wristlet.

Step 9- Secure the keyring in place by sewing both layers of the strap together. I like to go back and forth a few times to make it very secure.

I love pairing a wristlet with a matching chapstick holder! If you want to make your own, check out the tutorial here.

Pattern C-

Step 1 – First gather your materials, hardware and tools.

With the edges folded in and the center folded, you now have a strap that should be 1/2″ wide.

Step 3 – Pull the strap through the lobster claw clasp. Unfold the strap and bring the two ends together. Clip in place and sew the ends together with 3/8″ seam allowance.

Step 4 – Lay edges of the new seam open and begin folding the strap edges back in.

Step 5 – Once folded back up, your wristlet should start taking shape. Sew 1/8″ along both edges of the strap. Then move the lobster claw clasp to the seam that joined both ends of the fabric. This will be the base of our wristlet.

Step 6 – Using the 1/2″ round punch tool, round out the edges of the 1 1/2″ x 1/2″ pleather strip.

Step 7 – Center the pleather strip with the seam of the wristlet.

Step 8 – Using and awl, puncture through all layers to make space for the rivet.

Step 9 – Take out the awl and in the new hole, place the male piece of the rivet. To secure the rivet, attach the female piece and use the rivet tools to hammer the two piece together.

You did it! I just love how clean this wristlet is. The pleather adds a nice contrast in color to the fabric. Not to mention hardware comes in so many fun colors. You can really have a lot of fun customizing your wristlet! I love pairing mine with a DIY tassel and matching mini coin purse. Click the links below for tutorials to make your own!

So tell me…which did you make? Did you attempt all three? Did you make an accessory or wallet to pair with it? I have to see them! Be sure to tag me, @shychameleoncrafts if you share them on social media. Happy crafting!
