Hey there! I’ve been on a search for quick and easy sewing projects that allow me to carry more…but not have to have a purse. My lips get chapped rather easily and although I could store chapstick in one of my many wallets, I’d rather not have to. Then I came across a great tutorial made by Nicole of crimsonandscarlet on TikTok! Her tutorial goes over all the details and is super easy to follow.

This pattern does not require a lot of fabric, which gave me an opportunity to give new life to something in my scrap pile. I found a small scrap of one of my favorite witchy prints and it was just large enough! Her pattern calls for the shell and lining to be 6 3/4″ x 2 1/4″, which meant I needed to find a scrap piece to be the lining. Luckily I found a moon print scrap that would accent my shell fabric really well.

The pattern also calls for a tab to attach a swivel clip to the chapstick holder. I love this idea because it makes it so simple to clip it on to my wallet, key chain or wristlet. I have a tendency to swap my wallets to match my look, and being able to quickly swap it from one item to another is so great! Once everything was prepped, I quickly got to sewing.

As I mentioned this truly is a quick pattern. First step is to sew the tab used for the swivel clip. The tab needs to be folded in half and treated like a bias tape. Sew both edges of the now folded tab. Then place it through the swivel clip and fold in half.

Once the tab and swivel clip are set, next is to find the center top of the lining. Once you have the center marked, center the tab to the lining with the raw edge of the tab pointed up and secure. I like to use small binder clip.

Next place your lining fabric on top, making sure the right side is facing down. Stitch the perimeter leaving at least a 21/2-3″ opening on one side. I used 3/8″ seam allowance. Don’t forget to clip the corners.

It’s time to flip the piece right side out using the opening on the side. Nicole suggests using a crochet hook for the corners, but I was feeling lazy and used a pencil.

After your corners are set, it’s time to fold in the excess fabric from the opening and press it with an iron. This will help keep it in place for the next step. Take the bottom edge of the holder, with the lining side facing you, and fold it up towards the top edge. Secure the bottom edge at least 1/4″ from the top edge.

Lastly sew around the perimeter. Be sure not to sew the opening. Your final product should look similar in shape to the below image.

If you decide to try this pattern, be sure to share it and don’t forget to give Nicole of crimsonandscarlet on TikTok a follow! Her page is full of sewing tips and projects.
